Haribol !!
I was wondering if anyone could explain to me the details/meanings/reasons behind the Krishna temple Icons. I've only been to a temple once and I also attended the Ratha Yatra festival about a week ago. I must say that the religious icons have always confused me. I understand the personal image of krishna as he is protrayed. Blue skin, 2 arms, long black hair, and gorgeous if I might add (i have a thing for guys in blue, lol !! Oops, is that blasphemous ?) Back to my question though. When I went to the temple and at the festival all the icons just looked like a big confusing mess. I remember at the temple some sort of dog looking thing. All of which are always beautifully colored and engulfed in flowers. Still, for the life of me I don't understand these amorphous icons. Maybe I just don't understand the picture that's trying to be portrayed ?
Any information or pictures regarding these icons in question would be greatly appreciated.
Love & Light,
B.E.

Re: Krishna Temple Icons
Thu, August 17, 2006 - 2:20 PMThank you for you nice question. A general answer i can give for now but i can also include some resourses.
just as we cannot see the soul (spirit) leave the body when someone dies we cannot see God's spiritual body with mundane eyes , so He is very kind to appear in a fmaterial orm that is according to scripture. Not an idol, an idea that is made into God but a form that is made after the authorized description of God.
www.krishna.com/main.php
Krishna's Deity Form
Krishna’s form is spiritual; it is not made of matter. In our present condition, with our material eyes, we cannot see Krishna. So He descends in an apparently material form as the deity in the temple to allow us to see Him and serve Him directly.
For God there is no difference between material and spiritual energies, since they both come from Him and are under His control. He can use them as He sees fit. By Krishna’s will, the apparently material form of the deity is actually spiritual.
In the Vedas, Krishna reveals how the deity is to be made and worshiped. When Krishna’s form is created in this authorized way, He is personally present to accept service from His devotees.
Krishna states in Bhagavad-gita (9.26), “If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it.”
and here is a tribe totally dedicated to this activity of deity worship please post the same question there.

Re: Krishna Temple Icons
Tue, August 29, 2006 - 6:34 AMThe "dog looking thing" is possibly a calf, or young cow. There is a "famous picture" of Krishna with a calf and lots of people think it is a dog, just like sometimes, since Krishna is so beautiful, they think He is a girl. Krishna likes cows. He goes out with the calves and plays with his transcendental boyfriends daily. But He is not a girl with a dog!
I suggest you read the "Krishna Book" trilogy. The first book of the three tells about His transcendental pastimes in Vrndavana, and it describes how things really are eternally in the spiritual sky and particularly on Earth when Lord Krishna descended. Vrndavana is still there on Earth for those who have the spiritual vision and can enter into it.
Go to www.krishna.com for links and more information, since you appear to have sincere interest. Krishna Consciousness is for everyone. Feel free to ask me personally if you have any questions. Best of luck and Hare Krishna!
